Promoting Journalistic Professionalism and Independence

Alexander Golts

The Gerd Bucerius Free Press in Eastern Europe Award aims to promote the highest professional standards and moral courage in journalism. The 2013 awards, amounting to a total of 70,000 euros, were awarded to six journalists. The list of honorees includes two Russian journalists, Elena Kostjuschenko and Alexander Golts.

Golts is Editor-in-Chief of the online-portal Eshednewnij jurnal (Daily Journal). In publishing his factual and highly analytical articles, Golts, a renowned military and defense expert, regularly treads in sensitive territory in a country where any criticism of the armed forces or the secret service can be construed as treason. His influential articles on national and international topics, written in a matter-of-fact style, are also published in English by The Moscow Times.

Further awards go to the Siberian weekly Wetschernij Jakutsk, the Ukrainian journalist Serhii Leschenko, Elena Kostjuschenko of the Siberian weekly Novaja Gazeta, Azerbaijani journalist Tahmina Tagizade and Azerbaijani photojournalist Mehman Huseinov.

The ZEIT-Stiftung, in collaboration with the Norwegian Institusjonen Fritt Ord, will be presenting the awards to the journalists on June 20th, 2013 at the Nobel Institute in Oslo.
