Bucerius Staff Interview: Katharina Niesert

Katharina Niesert is the Events and Program Manager for the American Friends of Bucerius where she manages event planning and coordination for AFB programs and activities.

What do you value most about the Bucerius family?
Having a background in arts management, I have always been drawn to creative activities, and I really appreciate how the Bucerius family explores new and innovative programs. The diversity of institutions, from the first private law school in Germany to the Bucerius Kunst Forum, makes Bucerius a truly unique group to join.

When it comes to my everyday work, I like that the American Friends of Bucerius gives you the freedom to come up with new ideas and projects. Sometimes all it takes is a great team and fun tasks to make you happy.

What should every American know about Bucerius?
We are always interested in bringing new people to the American Friends of Bucerius and helping build a pathway for them to Germany.

What can Germany learn from the US?
Americans really believe that one person can make a difference, and we sometimes forget about that. Look at the ZEIT-Stiftung’s founder, Gerd Bucerius, who went on to make a great difference during World War II and afterwards in German politics and with Die ZEIT.

What is your biggest extravagance?
I import German laundry detergent – nothing smells better and I am convinced it can fight any stain. I also import toothpaste, Wackelpudding (Jelly) and Kinder-Schokolade – nothing better than a taste of home.

What is your current state of mind?
Content and curious. I am happy to be where I am and I’m looking forward to everything that lies ahead here in the office.

AND I’m glad that I finally answered these interview questions, since my colleague has been asking me for weeks to get it done – so, done!

What German proverb do you like most?
Den Tag nicht vor dem Abend loben” – Don’t praise the day before the dawn. Years in event planning have taught me that there will always be last-minute changes. It’s great to be prepared and to be able to improvise.
