International Issues: ZEIT-Stiftung President and CEO Michael Goering on US/German Relations and the Refugee Crisis
Global news outlets have been awash in stories about the flood of immigrants and refugees arriving in Europe from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other locations in the Middle East and Africa. Government leaders in the US and Europe have been pressed into action by the magnitude of the humanitarian crisis and cries for compassion by citizens around the world who read about the struggles of those who have reached Europe and see the tragic deaths of those who cannot survive the journey. Recently, ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius President and CEO Michael Goering has written several articles on the critical role that civil society must play, working alongside governments, to aid these refugees in their recovery and their acclamation to life in their new homes. Through partnerships among community organizations (like sports clubs), foundations, vocational schools, local schools, and others – and with participation mandated for all new arrivals – the route to becoming full participants in their new country will be faster and their transition accomplished more smoothly. You can read one of Michael Goering’s articles here.
