Bucerius Law School Summer Programs – Week 3
The following is an inside look at the third, and final, week of Bucerius Law School’s three immersive summer programs – the Comparative IP Law Program, the International Business Law Program, and the Sports Law Program. Read the first and second week summaries, too!
The third and final week of the 2016 Bucerius Summer Programs brought a lot of excitement for the three cohorts.
Participants focusing on International IP Transactions spent three sessions boosting their knowledge of contract drafting principles with Lezel Crook, Director of the Foreign Language Communications Program at Bucerius. This culminated in a two-day negotiation workshop in which small teams were tasked with establishing the terms for a cross-border license agreement. The negotiation workshop was supervised by IP practitioners including Dr. Kristoff Ritlewski from Berlin-based Hertin & Partner, a boutique law firm specialized in intellectual property.
The Program in International Business Law explored topics of arbitration with field expert Prof. George Bermann, Director of the Center for International Commercial and Investment Arbitration at Columbia Law School. In addition to his numerous undertakings at Columbia, Bermann has written and edited texts for the ABA and co-authored casebooks on both EU law and the law of the WTO; he has served regularly as a visiting professor in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands and become a respected name in international arbitration.
The Sports Law cohort focused on negotiation skills and delivered presentations on topics such as broadcasting and IP rights in sporting events. To boost their negotiation skills, participants received coaching from Prof. Dr. Peter Duvinage, professor at the University of Tübingen and partner at the law firm DUVINAGE, and Prof. Dr. Christian Duve, a partner at the Frankfurt office of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer who focuses on dispute resolution and served as arbitrator for the Court of Arbitration for Sport from 2007 to 2015. The critique of these industry figures was combined with a video self-analysis session and feedback from the program’s Academic Director, Dr. Carsten Jungmann.
Wrapping up the week, participants from all three programs gathered to take part in a Friday evening reception before spending a Saturday out of doors at the Sportpark Rothenbaum. Saturday’s schedule involved a range of athletic events organized by the Sports Law cohort that included bubble football and volleyball.
The team of the Clifford Chance International Office offers its thanks to all participants and lecturers for a fantastic summer and looks forward to keeping in touch via the BLS international alumni network! The next round of Bucerius Summer Programs will take place from July 10-29, 2017.
