Heidsieck Scholar Spotlight: Malte Radoy
Malte Radoy is one of this year’s Heidsieck Scholarship Recipients, visiting from Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg to study at the University of Colorado. He is studying education for music and physics, and will be graduating next semester. In the spotlight below, Malte talks about his studies in Germany and the US, as well as his plans for the future.
What will you be doing with your time in the States?
I will study Jazz Studies at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. Besides studying music, I would like to make new friends from all over the world and explore America’s impressive nature during activities like hiking through the Rocky Mountains.
That’s great! Tell us a little more about your musical studies.
I would like to concentrate on instrumental music and jazz history. I’m looking forward to developing my skills at the drums in a country known for being the origin of jazz music. I hope that the instrumental lessons and playing with other musicians in the Lab Bands of the university will help me diversify my drumming skills. In addition, learning about the scientific part of music will expand my knowledge. I will then hopefully be able to use my experiences of living half a year in another country to teach children a deeper knowledge about the origins of jazz culture.
Sounds like you’re planning on making the most of your time here! What are you most looking forward to during your stay?
To learn about the culture, the history of jazz music, improve my English, and meet new friends. But above all I am looking forward to deepening my experiences in playing the drums and telling my future students about my experiences and motivate them that way.
Do you intend to do any traveling while you’re here?
After my semester in Greeley I will travel to Chicago and New York. On the one hand I would like to see the cities, on the other hand I would like to see some jazz concerts there.
What souvenirs will you be bringing home with you?
Genuine drum sticks from New York and a UNC sweater.
We would like to wish Malte the best of luck in his studies at the University of Colorado in Greeley, and we look forward to welcoming him to the United States. Stay tuned for more profiles of our scholarship recipients!
