Bucerius Law School Summer Programs – Week 2
The following is an inside look at the second week of Bucerius Law School’s three immersive summer programs – the Comparative IP Law Program, the International Business Law Program, and the Sports Law Program. To read the first week’s post, click here.
During the second week of programming, participants in the International IP Transactions cohort had a full plate of activities with sessions exploring business aspects of licensing and relevant competition principles as well as numerous areas of copyright and trademark law.
Connecting concepts to current practice, the group took part in a negotiation simulation with attorneys from the San Francisco office of Squire Patton Boggs. Conducted via video conference, Dr. Siegmar Pohl and Shinichiro Iwata, two attorneys specializing in international transactions, guided participants through the negotiation of a cross-border license agreement between a German company and one based in Silicon Valley.
The week also saw the group through its second site workshop: Participants traveled to the ZAL Tech Center (Zentrum für Angewandte Luftfahrtforschung), a state-of-the-art civilian aviation research facility opened this past March, to meet with Martin Dehn, head of the IP and Licensing Division at Airbus Operations GmbH. The group was tasked with analyzing intellectual property considerations for a business model being developed from a concept that gained attention in the “Fly Your Ideas” global student challenge. Following a morning of brainstorming and presenting their strategies, participants toured the Hamburg Airbus facility for an inside look at the company’s supply chain and local production line.
For participants in the International Business Law program, the second week of sessions included explorations of International Mergers & Acquisitions. Though only an elective, everyone taking part in the program registered for the course. Spanning two days, meetings offered a seminar-style approach to the topic and were led by Dr. Hilke Herchen and John Hammond, two practitioners specializing in international M&A transactions at CMS Hasche Sigle, a leading German commercial law firms. The week continued with courses on Capital Markets Law and Corporate Governance led by Dr. Malte Wundenberg, an attorney in the London office of the law firm Hengeler Mueller, and Dr. Carsten Jungmann, a program director at Bucerius Law School and partner at the firm DUVINAGE.
Members of the Sports Law cohort held their first two presentations to demonstrate new skills in contract drafting. In the days following, sessions with practitioners Jörg von Appen and Dr. Heiner Kahlert enabled them to further their drafting skills in learning about contractual agreements surrounding the transfer of a football player and arbitration clauses for athletes, clubs and associations.
At an evening function on the heels of news surrounding the ban of Russian athletes at the Rio Olympics, participants were able to engage in conversation with Hajo Seppelt, a renowned German journalist and author who has focused his work on the subject of doping in international sports.
Participants from all three programs were invited to join a guided walking tour exploring Hamburg’s bohemian districts and alternative culture as well as the work of local, national and international graffiti and street artists. In addition, a cinema evening enabled the group to view the 2013 documentary “GOLD – YOU CAN DO MORE THAN YOU THINK,” a film directed by Michael Hammon that follows three athletes on their path to the Paralympic Games.
