Heidsieck Scholar Spotlight: Emily Ulbricht
Emily Ulbricht is one of this year’s Heidsieck Scholars, attending the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in pursuit of her master’s degree. She graduated from Freie Universität Berlin this past July, and is originally from Hessen, Germany.
Why did you decide to study abroad?
While studying, I worked as a radio reporter and became enthusiastic about audio and multimedia longform storytelling. US media has shown to be a front-runner when it comes to exploring new ways of nonfictional storytelling. This is why I decided to study at Columbia Journalism School in New York – to learn directly from journalists who work right at the core of the latest media innovation. Moreover, living in New York has always been one of my dreams; I am highly curious to explore the vibe of the city, get to know the people, and discover all the stories hidden in the streets of this incredible city.
What part of that are you most looking forward to?
I hope to get inspired by all these innovations that are emerging in US media, to get a profound training in journalistic craftmanship, to make friends with journalists from all over the world, and, most of all, get at least a glimpse of how it is to live in a city like New York.
Do you intend to do any traveling outside of New York?
If I have some free time left during my studies, I’ll try to discover the area around NYC and cities nearby – Boston, Washington, Pennsylvania. After graduation I will probably travel to the West Coast to visit my cousin and to Toronto, where my sister lives. My dream would be a road trip throughout the country.
What’s the one thing you’re bringing with you that you can’t go without?
A small oil painting by my grandmother, who was an artist – to make my new home feel like home from the moment I put that painting on the wall.
We would like to wish Emily the best of luck in her pursuit of her master’s degree and her time in NYC! Stay tuned for more profiles of our scholarship recipients.
