Interview with Daniel Maland, International Alumnus 2009

What’s the perfect Bucerius experience for you?

My semester on exchange at Bucerius began with a pot-luck dinner, where the international exchange students and our new German peers were asked to prepare dishes and dine together. In this one room, law students from all around the world were able to highlight something they loved about their own culture, while learning about and enjoying what others had to bring to the table. Creating new friendships and building professional relationships while learning something new in a great setting epitomizes the perfect Bucerius experience to me.

What aspect of Bucerius and the ZEIT-Stiftung is most appealing to you?

The most appealing aspects of Bucerius and the ZEIT-Stiftung are their openness to new viewpoints and different perspectives. From the rotating exhibits at the Bucerius Kunst Forum, to the ever varying programs held by the American Friends of Bucerius, the Zeit Foundation and Bucerius consistently provide access to insightful educational opportunities with a truly global perspective.

What do you value most in the Bucerius family?

I value the diversity of the Bucerius family most. By being a member of this great family, I have access to a wealth of unique perspectives opportunities provided by the vast many members of the Bucerius family, living on every inhabited continent in the world.

What did you enjoy most while in Hamburg?

Beyond brunch at the Literaturhaus and relaxing by the Alster, I enjoyed being able to experience everyday life in a beautiful city with a group of friends from Bucerius who were always ready to make the most out of every day.

Who do you think should be a Bucerius fellow in the U.S.?

It’s incredibly easy to underestimate how truly large and diverse the United States is. Anyone, from an individual looking for a completely different cultural experience, to someone who wants to be surrounded by a community similar to their own, should be a fellow in the U.S.

What can Bucerius learn from the U.S.?

A school with strong school spirit can’t be beat. School spirit brings the student body together and keeps alumni in touch. I think Bucerius has done a wonderful job in building its school spirit, and hope it continues along this path while still keeping an eye on the U.S. universities’ student pride.

What is your biggest extravaganza?

I have an insatiable hunger for travel. I always take into account that whenever I have a free moment to steal away, I’ll pack a bag and go explore.

What is your current state of mind?

As a recent law school graduate, and a new lawyer, I try every day to maintain an open mind and remain flexible.

What German proverb do you like most?

Besser ein Spatz in der Hand als eine Taube auf dem Dach, which means “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush,” and reminds me to always make the most out of what I’ve got.
