This website provides information about our aims and programs. The protection of our website users’ personal data is of great importance to us. Our privacy policy is intended to clarify whether and how we process the personal data of visitors to our Internet portal.

The following gives a simple overview of what happens to your personal information when you visit our website.

Personal Data

Personal information is any data with which you could be personally identified. This includes information such as your name, address, phone number and date of birth. Information that is not directly related to your real identity – such as favourite websites or number of users per page – is not considered personal data.

The data collected on this website are processed by the website operator. The operator’s contact details can be found in the website’s required site notice.

Use of Personal Data

We assure you that all personal data is treated confidentially at AFB and that we observe the relevant legal provisions, in particular, the Federal Data Protection Act, the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 and the Telemedia Act, when processing and using your data.

We store and process data necessary to perform our transactions. We use this data, in particular, to inform you about our programs, invite you to our events or send you a donation receipt.

We will not use any of your data for any other purpose, such as marketing or sharing with others, unless you have given your consent.

With regards to processing and using personal data, we occasionally employ a service provider to handle and technically execute or support data processing and utilization according to our instructions. The service provider is obliged to comply with the statutory data protection provisions to the same extent as AFB and also handles personal data confidentially. We adhere to the statutory provisions on contracted data processing, particularly with regards to concluding agreements and supervising the service provider.

The Right to Information and Modification and the Withdrawal of Consent

As a visitor to our Internet portal, you always have the right to request information about your stored data, its origin, its recipients, and the purpose of its collection at no charge.

You may also withdraw your consent to the storage and processing of your personal data at any time for future use. In this case, we will block or delete data stored about you in accordance with legal requirements and, in particular, no longer use and process your data for marketing purposes or immediately discontinue sending you advertising material. All you need to do is send an informal message to:

American Friends of Bucerius
871 United Nations Plaza, 15th Floor
New York, NY 10017
Email: Smidt@zeit-stiftung.de

Please note that in case of complete or extensive deletion of your data, our services may be limited or may be impossible to provide.

If there has been a breach of data protection legislation, the person affected may also file a complaint with the competent regulatory authorities. The competent regulatory authority for matters related to data protection legislation is the data protection officer. Details can be found at the following link: www.bfdi.bund.de/DE/Infothek/Anschriften_Links/anschriften_links-node.html.

Right to Data Portability

You have the right to have data which we process based on your consent or in fulfillment of a contract automatically delivered to yourself or to a third party in a standard, machine-readable format. If you require the direct transfer of data to another responsible party, this will only be done to the extent technically feasible.

Protective Measures

AFB takes all necessary technical and organizational security measures to protect your personal data from loss and misuse. Your data is saved in a secure operating environment that is inaccessible to the public.

We cannot guarantee the confidentiality of information transmitted to AFB by email. As third parties may be able to view the content of emails, we recommend that you do not send us confidential information this way. It is also important for you to protect yourself against unauthorized access to your password and computer. If you share your computer with others, be sure to log out after each session.

Processing Data

We collect, process, and use personal data only insofar as it is necessary to establish, or modify legal relationships with us (master data). This is done based on Art. 6 (1) (b) DSGVO, which allows the processing of data to fulfill a contract or for measures preliminary to a contract. We collect, process and use your personal data when accessing our website (usage data) only to the extent required to enable you to access our services.

Collected customer data shall be deleted after completion of the order or termination of the business relationship. Legal retention periods remain unaffected.

Use of PayPal

We are using PayPal (PayPal (Europe) S.a.r.l. et Cie, S.C.A.) for your donations. Under “support – make a gift” you will be forwarded to Paypal.com. The data collected as part of the donation is collected exclusively by PayPal. The privacy policy and terms and conditions of PayPal can be found here: https://www.paypal.com/de/webapps/mpp/ua/privacy-full?locale.x=en_DE.

The AFB uses the data you provide to PayPal (name, e-mail address purpose of the transaction, amount, date of payment, comment on donation) to create a donation receipt. If you have not provided PayPal with a postal address to which we can send the receipt, we will ask for this by e-mail.

All data used by AFB will be deleted after the transaction has been successfully completed.
